TMP x YTL Hotels

This year, The Missing Piece’s CNY2019 collection features a number of pieces that have been inspired by The Majestic Malacca. YTL Hotels first approached me with the idea of designing a capsule collection inspired by one of their hotels a few months back. They gave me free reign over which hotel I would like to work with and after looking through their properties, The Majestic Malacca was an obvious choice. I love colour, texture and detail and The Majestic Malacca is just full of all that.

Being peranakan, many of the elements found in the restored 1920s Straits Settlement mansion are familiar, faithfully restored and preserved in detail. For example, the classic marble game, the tea set, colourful napkins with their scalloped edges. Many of the colours, the fabrics and patterns reflect many of the details lovingly preserved in the hotel.

What I believe stands out about this particular collection and what drew me to the Majestic Malacca Hotel is that each design represents a celebration of our multicultural heritage, with a contemporary twist. It is what makes us unique, here in South East Asia. I like that this collection has its own personality and is not concerned with whatever is  considered ‘trendy’ or ‘fashionable’ or by what is going to generate the most in sales or ‘likes’. This collection is simply about the experiences I had and the beauty I observed while staying at The Majestic Malacca.

We have dreamt up pieces with a rich use of motif and detail in a distinctive palette of soothing hues reminiscent of Peranakan art and architecture. One of our favourite pieces in this collection is a contemporary plaid cheongsam finished with a charming scalloped collar, inspired by the delightful green scalloped-edged napkins handed out at The Majestic Malacca Hotel’s afternoon tea. Whether it’s to chill by the pool or spa, or indulge in high-tea or Gin O’clock, we envision our pieces taking a guest through the full experience of an escape at The Majestic Malacca, or one of its sister properties with effortless elegance and ease.

Thank you for this opportunity YTL Hotels! Thank you for entrusting me with this project and giving me free reign in the design process. I hope what we came up with does The Majestic Malacca justice. xoxo
